The Netherlands is a member ever since the foundation of ECSA in 1992 and promotes its staff to be active in sports for the physical and mental wellbeing.
Dutch Customs is organised in several regions with a staff of approximately 6.500 Custom Officers.
We are the enforcement authority that is responsible for the supervision of the EU external cross-border trade. We also deal with levying and collecting national excises and consumption taxes, and are responsible for the enforcement in this field. We ensure that the transport of goods is conducted according to the rules, and facilitates cross-border trade of goods.
We perform enforcement duties for the European Union (EU), the Ministry of Finance and other ministries and enforcement authorities. To this end, we apply European and national laws and regulations.
In this way Dutch Customs contributes to:
• solid financing for the government;
• safe society;
• strong, attractive and fair internal market, by which prosperity in the EU and the Netherlands is enhanced.

Every year we host the ECSA for the biggest walking event in the world: The 4 days marches of Nijmegen.
An event where tens of thousands walkers from all over the world participate to test themselves physical and mental.
Men under 50 years old have to walk 50 km a day and women and men older than 50 have to walk 40 km a day for 4 days. During all days there are festivities in the city of Nijmegen and along the road there are a lot of spectators. The event is broadcasted on national TV.

Besides organising the ECSA event of the 4 days marches, dutch custom officers participate in several other ECSA events such as, cycling, shooting, table tennis and running.
We try hard to participate in as much ECSA events as possible and promote the importance of sporting, but also to make useful contacts with counterparts from other administrations.
